In over 90% of couples who fail to become pregnant after a period of one to two years despite regular sexual intercourse, a medical reason is found to be the cause. The earlier the cause is diagnosed the greater the likelihood of successful treatment. Unsuccessful fertility treatment, particularly in the first year, can cause emotional stresses that further restrict the couple's fertility.
Advice from friends and family such as “take a holiday”, “maybe you’re under too much stress at work" and "try some yoga” often make the situation even worse. They seem to suggest that the couple is unconsciously preventing the pregnancy. The worst thing about these innuendoes is that childless couples often worry about the fact that they might be doing just that.
