Nicotine - harmful to fertility

Nicotine affects fertility and this is clearly stated in the health warning printed on cigarette packs.

In fact the effect of smoking on a woman's fertility is more serious than previously thought. The fertility of a woman smoker is the same as the fertility of a non-smoking woman 10 years older. An article published in “Human Reproduction” observed a 28% lower rate of the “baby-take-home-rate” in women smokers than in their non-smoking peers.

The possibility of a miscarriage is about 21% higher in women smokers than in non-smokers. Smoking clearly reduces the success rate of an assisted fertilization. In many cases the ovaries' response to the medication is lessened and there is a low rate of pregnancies. It is also known that smoking during pregnancy can harm the baby’s health. Children born to smoking mothers usually have a low birth weight and show an overall poor condition compared to those born to non-smoking mothers.

Smoking can also cause ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the womb), cervix and fallopian tubes problems and menstruation dysfunction.
