It is important to ensure that
adoptive parents are conscious of the needs of an adopted child, aware
of the lifetime of love and care the child will require and that they
are careful not to transfer to the adopted child all the hopes and
desires they had for a child of their own. One has to be conscious that
the adopted child is not genetically related and was born to other
parents. The success of an adoption depends absolutely on the realistic
expectations and attitudes of the adopting family towards the new
family member. The adoption authorities are legally obliged to make
their decisions based entirely on the well being of the child
particularly as, according to the law, an adopted child has identical
rights to a biological child.
Embryo adoption
In Austria surplus embryos resulting from IVF treatment must routinely be destroyed after 10 years. However we intend to start an Austrian wide discussion on embryo adoption as it is our belief that all embryos should be respected and viewed as a future potential life. In Germany and Italy the debate over embryo adoption is gaining intensity, this is not yet the case in Austria. The reasons for this are many and varied. The Catholic Church which in Italy supports the adoption of surplus embryos cannot agree on its position on this issue in Austria. In a private discussion with the diocesan bishop Dr Klaus Küng (the representative for the Ethical Commission of the Bishop's Conference), Dr Leonhard Loimer (from the KinderWunschKlinik) could only discern negative views. It is a great pity that this aspect of a right for life is not yet recognised by the Catholic Church in Austria! |
