Because the embryo's cells are still unspecialised at this early phase in their development this intervention does not harm the viable embryo and allows it to continue with its development. The chances of pregnancy and the birth rate are increased using PID or PGD methods. At the same time, the risk of miscarriage or the necessity of abortion due to genetic reasons are reduced.

The PID is still illegal in Austria, however its use is under discussion.
