Premature menopause (POF-syndrome)

is a defect of the ovaries that manifests itself either through the absence of the first period or the premature exhaustion of the ovaries of a woman under 40 years of age. This dysfunction occurs in about 1% of women under the age of 40. At the age of 20 approximately 10,000 women have POF; at the age of 30 approximately 1,000 women have it.

The worst forms show an
absence of puberty development and menstruation. Women with POF experience all the symptoms of the menopause: infertility, palpitations, heat intolerance, hot flushes, anxiety attacks, depression and fatigue.

POF is biochemically characterised as the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) due to its low level of oestrogen and high level of gonadotropin.

In addition to infertility hormonal dysfunction can also cause other serious symptoms and lead to pre- mature
osteoporosis. The only way for a woman without ovary reserves to have children is by egg donation. This procedure is illegal in Austria but the KinderWunschKlinik will gladly recommend an experienced institution abroad.
