Surgical alternatives

Surgical intervention is sometimes advised in order to restore fertility. The type of intervention and the likelihood of success vary for each individual case. It is important to take good advice and ask as many questions as you wish to ensure that you make the right decision for your circumstances. Some surgical measures make sense, some don’t.

In some cases, the surgery can be performed by abdominoscopy (laparoscopy).

A myoma (benign excrescence of the womb's muscle layer) can, depending on location, inhibit a successful pregnancy. If this appears likely, we would advise its removal. The method of removal depends upon the location of the myoma. It can be removed through the abdominal wall or by a uterus endoscope.

Cysts can have several causes. The need for removal depends on their nature and location. Cysts that exist on the ovaries can disappear spontaneously. However, surgery might be necessary when the cyst is large or persistent.

A malformation of the uterus can require surgical correction in order to allow a successful pregnancy. Traditionally this was performed by cutting through the wall (septum) that divides the uterus in two halves. Unfortunately, this lead to an increased risk of miscarriage. Nowadays the procedure is normally carried out through the vagina and 75% of affected women eventually become mothers.

Blocked fallopian tubes can be operated on in some cases, the rehabilitation of the ovarian function will depend on how damaged the tissue has become.

Fallopian tubes filled with fluid have been scientifically proven to reduce the chances of successful IVF treatment. It is therefore wise in such cases to remove the fallopian tubes as they no longer perform any function.

Cysts on the ovaries as well as adhesions or agglutinations on organs caused by endometriosis should be surgically removed. However, under IVF treatment, endometriosis demands an individual therapy. Surgical reconstruction is preferable to drug therapy and we can refer you to the best centres in Austria for this procedure to be carried out.
