Surrogacy

Many people wishing for a child think about the option of surrogacy. Surrogacy is the term used to describe the procedure when another woman carries a child to term for a childless woman.

This possibility of surrogacy exists when a woman cannot become pregnant due to a uterus disease or operation but is able to generate egg cells with the potential to be fertilised.

The eggs are removed from the patient, fertilised with the partner’s sperm cells (or sperm cells from a donor) and placed into the surrogate mother’s healthy uterus. If a pregnancy results, the surrogate mother then carries the child to term.

Surrogacy is illegal in Austria and Germany.
